Wasn't it working better awhile ago? Was it the theme or quick reply fixes you had to apply that made it get kind of weird?

Definitely sounds like a mess. But like you said it's still functional for now.

I'm guessing you've looked into some other plugins... or maybe even like an external hosting attachment thing. But that might not be ideal for the long term.

As always your efforts are appreciated and this should be a hobby more than work, so don't fret it too much!

I mean, technically speaking, one could say I'm the one who broke the attachment UI, and one would in fact be technically correct there. The current weirdness is due to changing the style and elements of the Full Reply page, which wasn't inherently necessary for site operation. Still, it's the only part of the site that really broke from trying to retheme it. And that tells me it was really due for an overhaul.

There's basically nothing I've found for better drop-in attachment systems, so I'd be willing to guess I'm on my own. Would definitely rather build my own better system than depend on an outside service, so I'm going to put that on the big to-do list.

Anyhow, always happy to see you guys enjoying the site even if it's a weird little hobby community held together with duct tape and tentacles!
