Maybe older movies aren't my thing. Just saw Escape from New York and it was pretty bland, incredible cast and crew, but the overall film just wasn't entertaining. I feel like I was baited by the poster and premise, feels like a million other generic eighties movies.

Might catch a showing of tmnt if I'm not tired after work. I remember recording it when I was a kid lol

Do you like any other John Carpenter movie?

RE: Movies - NotImportant - 03-19-2026

I saw Halloween and The Thing, those are pretty good Tongue

Also I just came back from the theater, turns out I've never actually seen TMNT2 before, just the opening fight scene. The story is all over the place, but I loved how goofy it was. Not so much a fan of a freeze frame for both the title card and end credits though. I'm sure at the time, especially as a sequel to the first movie, it wasn't received too well.

It's a mixed bag, kids liked it because it appealed to that sensibility. Then as you got older you realized it was the inferior movie. Though after that most recent viewing I respect the hell out of it for the puppetry. The turtles doing all those back flips, Toka and Razar, they look just as good as Rocket Racoon does now. So I would say the first movie is the better film, but the second one has better effects. Halloween and The Thing both rule. Though Big Trouble in Little China is probably my favorite since it's such a good fantasy adventure.

Ted came up briefly in another channel, so I thought I would briefly mention something here, especially for Ellie. If you are seeing Ted for the first time, see the Flash Gordon movie first. It enriches one of the best jokes and Flash Gordon is a great film in it's own right. Though by "great" I mean it's good some real good actors, a very camp story, and a Queen soundtrack.

Interesting, I'll try to remember to check out both of those if I ever have the time.

If it's not too late, I just realized one more John Carpenter movie we should celebrate. My buddies and I just finished Big Trouble in Little China again. It's one the BEST urban fantasy movies ever made. Plus it critics white savior narratives without being an ass about it. It's so much.

I'm between watching Flash Gordon or The Room tn. I saw that Carpenter made Big Trouble in Little China, might check that out next time.

Unrelated, but has anyone seen Virtual Combat? It's a sci-fi (vaguely) movie about a rogue video game character in Vegas. Saw it a couple weeks ago bc Michael Dorn voices the villain.

I have never heard of it before, but evil Michael Dorn sounds great.

Flash Gordon is definitely a better choice than the room, Queen soundtrack FTW.
