Saw Heavy Metal (1981) a few days ago and while I understand the desire to rotoscope tits and license random cheap trick songs, I didn't find it all that enjoyable. Mostly due to the disjointed narrative. 
This era of American animation was interesting however, with Heavy Metal, Wizards (1977), and the old animated LOTR, I miss this scruffier style, its full of experimentation. I wish we were in a world where these movies did well, because outside of a few projects (most of them comedy) I feel that American animation is creatively stuck in the family market.

Escape from LA is pretty bad. I like New York, but yeah some of John Carpenter's movies can be slow. Yeah it's got Kurt Russell as "Pliskin", his look and name is what inspired Kojima a bit.

The Chipmunk's were such a cool thing in my youth haha. That and like mouse characters in general. An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, The Secret of NIMN, Great Mouse Detective, etc haha.

heck yeah! i wonder why mouse characters were so popular back then? those movies are all classics though! always loved the rescuers as well! i actually haven't seen the great mouse detective yet but i own it on DVD, so i really do need to watch it sometime as it looks like a really fun animated film.

ill have to check some of those out, i don't think i ever saw the animated lord of the rings stuff. Like you were saying it was nice to see more experimentation like that back then. there were also lots of cool anime OVAs in the 80s and 90s that i still need to check out, some pretty interesting/strange stuff back then

Great to see some more movie talks. I don't know much about those older animations, but I do love the Rescuers and Rescuers Down Under. I still watch Great Mouse Detective as an adult. Also if you get a chance, go see Mortal Kombat 2. It is so damn good, hell don't even see Mortal Kombat 1. They know it didn't go over well so they do a soft reboot and end up with something truly AWESOME.

Going to see Obsession tonight (second time lol) but I've been meaning to watch Mortal Kombat. I remember not liking the 2021 movie so if they moved away from that I'm happy already.

Heavy Metal was cool to see on VHS in grade school, since it was so "mature" haha. I think it has a sequel that might be better or worse?

I still think the old 1995 Mortal Kombat is pretty fun. Haven't seen the new ones though. I can't really think of many new movies I've bothered seeing... the Dune movies at least.

They actually did  a new version with updated lyrics to include the new characters for these movies. It's a great tribute.

I'm going to be watching Mk2 tomorrow after my shift. So tonight I'm rewatching Mortal Kombat 2021, hopefully its better than i remembered. I think I want to bundle my thoughts on both movies together, so expect an update tomorrow
