@NotImportant: Do you mean you've only seen S1 of DS9 so far? Because oh Mikoto mama mia, it gets incredible. I remember it took me like years to get through S1-3 and I liked it, just as a very casual watch. But I watched the second half quickly as it got into a huge arc and all the characters became amazing. Can't wait to rewatch it someday (shame I don't know it'll ever get a remaster like TNG).

@TamazingRandom: As for the older movies, I still want to watch TOS first before I go through all those. I've seen all the TNG material and DS9 so far.

Yeah im on season 2 currently and i have the same problems that you do. Too episodic, feels like it was mainly trying to be "more tng". I have heard that it improves, but until i reach that golden shift, ds9 is going  to take a while. Seasons 1&2 of tng took me over a year to watch too for similar reasons.

The TOS movies dont really adhere much to the show, but i absolutely recommend you watch it first. The film stories hit much harder when youve spent tens of hours with the crew.

Speaking of the movies, I’m considering making a trip to San Francisco for a showing of Star Trek IV. It’ll be in two weeks and I’ll be in the area for a concert too. So tempting…

I liked the first two seasons of TNG, but they were very funky. Interesting how Rykert seemed like the normal "hero' lead character too. But he falls through the wayside later on haha. S3 and on it definitely hits a stride.

But yeah trust me, DS9 gets so much better and awesome. Even the doctor who I kind of didn't like early on, ended up having incredible episodes. Loved them all by the end of it. It's like if a good Mass Effect series existed lol. Cool setting and bigger cast of alien characters. But yeah early on it feels like it's trying too be another TNG...

I haven't tried Voyeger much yet, other than seeing some on TV way back. Never sounds too great. I'm actually more interested in Enterprise. But I hear that one got cancelled before it starts getting real good...

After Enterprise, I have no interest in the new era lol.

So yeah I'll hit up TOS next.

Rare update from me: Im actually seated rn for Star Trek:TMP!
Lets see how it feels in a theater setting! (No pictures bc im uncomfortable w/ taking pictures inside a theater lol)

Somehow both the best and worst looking movie I've ever seen lol. I love the exploration in TMP. The size of Vger and its interior are so impressive and beautiful to watch in a theater. The actual story itself leaves alot to be desired. Feels bloated at times, but what is provided is rarely interesting or moves the story/characters along in a satisfying way. I think its because this movie is still paced like a TOS episode. The TOS charm feels a bit missing from the cast as well, but the concept of the story itself is strong (ignoring the episode "The Changeling" which does a similar idea better...and was also shown before the movie)

I like The Motion Picture a little more every time I see it, but its flaws never really fade. I always find myself wondering what kind of movie it could have been without its production issues.

I'm making good progress on TOS myself. It has some clunkers, but it's growing on me. Kirk, Spock, and Bones... all great characters. I've seen The Balance of Terror (Romulans) and the Klingon episodes, both great. Isn't there some lore reason why the Klingon's look so different in TNG? I think it was a production cost here in TOS for simpler makeup... but I recall there being an actual explanation lol.

I've seen TMP way back, but I'll still keep my expectations reserved even after watching the series. It just always sounds "okay", with the quality up and down for all the movies. That's how I felt about the TNG ones too. The Borg one is solid I guess, but I'd take any of the two parters in the show over the movies. And Nemesis is just terrible...

In canon, there was some disease due to genetic tampering with human dna that made klingons look more "human" during the TOS era. Canonically they always had the bumpy heads haha.

TNG two parters often feel better to watch than the movies, but I did find myself enjoying Insurrection and First Contact. I think its due to the movies needing to feel more "cinematic." More of Trek's commentary and clever writing take the backseat for a more general audience appeal, my theory at least.

It's kind of awesome that Jonathan Frakes himself directed those.
